The Symphonic and Concert Bands are the top instrumental ensembles at Chapel Hill High School perform both literature from the standard wind repertoire as well as contemporary works. The bands regularly participate in LGPE and are comprised of students grades 9-12.
The marching band is an extracurricular activity comprised of the playing members (winds and percussion) and the visual ensemble. This organization meets after school hours. The marching band begins preparation for their fall season during the summer. The marching band performs at each Chapel Hill High School football game, various parades throughout the year, pep rallies, and usually at two to three contests / festivals during the fall.
The Beginner Band at CHHS is for students who have no prior experience playing a wind or percussion instrument, or for those who would like to pursue a secondary instrument. Members are taught the fundamentals of tone production, technique, and musicality on their chosen instruments.
The Percussion Ensemble is comprised of percussion students grades 9-12, and provides a supplemental percussion education in a small group setting. Members of the percussion ensemble contribute to the Symphonic Band and Concert Band, while working on their own concert repertoire.
The Jazz Band is an ensemble that meets every day during 2nd semester and is comprised of students in grades 10-12. Students in Jazz Band learn about the origins of this uniquely American style of music, while playing a variety of standard literature, studying transcription, and improvising melodies. The culmination of the course is a Jazz Concert in the Spring.
